How to Use the URL Tracking Tool

EveryoneSocial's URL Tracking enables you to track branded content within your site's analytics program, e.g. Google Analytics. URL Tracking is activated by an EveryoneSocial Admin and works with the content domains you own and manage—websites where you host content and collect data.

Once a colleague shares a link post that matches one of your site's URLs, EveryoneSocial will automatically add the UTM parameter values, aka tracking keys, to the end of the shared link post's URL. New data will begin streaming into your analytics tool, as long as you've configured the tool to track those values.

This article outlines how to create tracking keys, how to delete tracking keys, and provides an overview of how to review data received from the URL Tracking Tool. We also have an Overview of the URL Tracking Tool for use cases and best practices.

Let's get started!

🔹 This is available on the Teams, Enterprise, and Unlimited plans.

🔸 This feature is accessible to Admin.

Designate URL tracking keys and values

All tracking links require configuring tracking keys and values before data can be tracked.

  1. Go to Admin.
  2. Select Settings > Share/URL Tracking.
  3. Enter the domain to add the additional tracking link.

🔸 The domain entered must also be configured to work with your analytics provider.

  4. Click Add, then click Edit for the newly added domain.
  5. Enter New Tracking Key.
    • "Tracking Key" is also known as a UTM parameter.
    • If your analytics provider requires "utm_" to precede the parameter, be sure to include it here. Example: utm_source
  6. Click Add.
  7. Select the value type.
  8. Enter or select the value.
  9. Optional: Click Add and repeat steps 6-9 if you want to add multiple tracking keys for the domain.
  10. Click Done to save your tracking link.

Delete URL tracking links or a tracking key

You can delete an entire tracking link or delete specific tracking keys if a tracking link has more than one tracking key assigned.

  1. Go to Admin.
  2. Select Settings > Share/URL Tracking.
  3. Click Edit on the URL.
  4. Click Delete next to the tracking link or tracking key.
  5. Confirm deletion by clicking Delete in the popup.

URL tracking data review

Your CRM or analytics tool will begin to collect and parse data from the tracking link's clicks once shares are made with links that have been added to the URL Tracking Tool and the links are clicked.

Use the tracking keys and the values to create views and see the data sent to your analytics tool.

For example, in Google Analytics, you'll build custom segments and select the filter (tracking key) that "exactly matches" the value for the URL.

FAQ

Can I add a value to see who is sharing the post?

You can track who is sharing a post using a User ID. This is done by adding a Dynamic Value for a  User ID . The  User ID  is a non-identifiable value correlated to the  Analytics >  Users report to see who shared the content. There are two values,  User ID  and  Name , that you can use to compare a shared post's  User ID  to the user in your Workspace.

Do I need to include "utm_" in my tracking key?

This depends on your analytics provider. Some providers require "utm_" to be contained within the URL so the analytics app can identify the text that follows as the UTM parameter and specified value. Other analytics apps search the whole URL for exact matches and do not require the usage of "utm_" in the tracking key text or URL. We suggest consulting with your analytics provider for their recommendation.

Why is my tracking key not saving?

We typically see tracking keys invalidate because there are spaces included and the tracking key does not accept spaces. Please add a dash or period in place of spaces to save the tracking key.
