Assign Moderators to a Group

A Moderator reviews and publishes content in one specific group. This article covers how an Admin assigns one, what the assignment gives that person, and what it does not.

Only an Admin can assign a Moderator. A Moderator cannot appoint another Moderator.

Assign a Moderator

  1. Go to Groups and open the group.
  2. Click Edit in the group header.
  3. Scroll to Moderators.
  4. Use Add Moderators to search for and select the people you want.
  5. Click Done.

The people you select can moderate immediately. There is no invitation to accept.

What the assignment grants

Inside that one group, a Moderator can:

  • Publish posts without approval.
  • Approve, remove, and schedule other people's content using the For Approval, Scheduled, and Removed tabs.
  • Change the group's settings and content sources.
  • View analytics for the group.

Outside that group, nothing changes. The person keeps whatever Advocacy Role they already had, and in every other group they are an ordinary member. Someone can moderate one group, or several, or none.

Moderator is not an Advocacy Role. It is a per-group assignment that sits alongside the Admin, Contributor, or User role on someone's account. User Roles, States, and Posting Permissions explains how the two fit together.

Who to pick

The useful Moderator is someone close to the subject matter of the group, not someone senior. They are making a judgment call on whether a piece of content is worth the team's attention, which is a content decision rather than an approval formality.

Two or three Moderators per active group tends to work better than one. It keeps the approval queue moving when somebody is away, and submitted content that sits for a week may as well have been rejected.

Make sure they know content is waiting

Turn on Moderator Email Notifications in the same group's settings so Moderators are emailed when content is awaiting approval. Without it, the queue depends on someone remembering to look. See Configure a Group's Settings.

Remove a Moderator

Open the group's edit screen, go to Moderators, and remove the person from the list. They stay a member of the group and keep their Advocacy Role. Only the moderation of that group goes away.

FAQ

Does someone need to be a member of the group first?

Assign moderation from the group's edit screen and select the person there. If they are not already in the group, add them as a member as well so the group appears in their sidebar.

Can a User be a Moderator?

Yes. Moderation is granted per group and does not depend on the Advocacy Role. A person with the base User role can moderate a group, and inside that group they publish and approve like any other Moderator.

Do Moderators get access to the Admin panel?

No. The Admin panel and Settings are for Admins only. A Moderator works from inside the group they moderate.

What happens to a group's content if I remove its only Moderator?

Nothing already published changes, but submitted content will sit in the For Approval queue until an Admin or a new Moderator reviews it. Assign a replacement in the same pass.
